Is This The Most Important Yoga Pose For Kids’ Mental Health?

Let’s get serious for a moment—children’s mental health is at an alarming point. Kids today are struggling with anxiety, stress, and overwhelm in ways that weren’t so talked about when we were growing up. And the statistics are staggering: According to a 2022 report from the Children’s Rights Alliance, 1 in 6 young people aged 11-19 experience mental health difficulties such as anxiety and depression. And I know that it’s a similar case all across the world. And honestly, I think those numbers could be even higher now. Let that sink in.

So what are we doing about it?

I know that yoga alone isn’t a cure-all, but it’s an incredible tool in our toolbox. One of the most powerful ways to support a child’s mental health is by teaching them how to calm their body so they can calm their mind. And one pose, in particular, stands out for me when it comes to creating that calm: Savasana—also known as the “corpse pose.” It’s the final resting pose at the end of yoga practice, where we lie still and let everything settle.

I’ll be real with you, though—stillness is hard. As an adult, I struggle with it myself. Just today, I found myself spiraling—thinking things like “everyone hates me,” “what’s the point in anything I do?” and “I’m not good enough.” Anxiety was running the show. And it would have been easy to grab my phone, start a new show on Netflix, and just distract myself. But here’s the thing: distraction isn’t healing.

Instead, I paused. I gave myself the gift of a moment. I took a deep breath, let my body rest, and found stillness. And that small moment of peace reminded me why practices like these matter. Mental health matters.

Why Yoga is Good for Kids

Yoga offers kids so much more than just physical flexibility. It helps them build resilience, manage their emotions, and connect with their breath and bodies. It’s a way for them to feel safe and supported in a world that can often feel overwhelming.

But let’s talk specifically about the power of Savasana for kids.

When a child lies in Savasana, they get to experience a rare moment of complete stillness. And for kids with anxiety or high energy, that can feel impossible at first. I’ve worked with many children—some calm, others hyperactive like my own child who shows strong signs of ADHD, but we’ve been on a waiting list forever here in Ireland to get the official diagnosis. They’re all different, but there’s one thing I know for sure: helping them calm their bodies is the first step to calming their minds.

It’s why Savasana is more than just a pose—it’s a practice in letting go, and kids need that as much as we do.

The Power of Savasana for Mental Health

When we teach kids how to rest in Savasana, we’re giving them tools they’ll use for life. They learn that it’s okay to stop, breathe, and reset. They learn to listen to their bodies and recognize when they’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed. And that’s HUGE.

Think about it—if we can teach our children to pause and breathe instead of reacting, we’re empowering them to manage their emotions in healthier ways. We’re setting them up to be more resilient, more mindful, and more at ease with themselves.

For kids dealing with anxiety, Savasana can feel like a miracle. They might be hesitant at first (because let’s be honest, stillness doesn’t come naturally to most children), but over time, they start to ask for it. They realize that those few minutes of quiet at the end of a yoga session is their time to just be.

Mental Health Practices Matter (Even When Things Seem Okay)

The truth is, we don’t just practice yoga for the hard days. We practice it because hard days will come, and we want our kids to be able to handle them. It’s easy to let these practices slip when everything feels okay, but that’s the exact time we need to keep at it. When we build a habit of helping our kids find calm, we’re preparing them for when life gets overwhelming.

And trust me, as a parent who’s been through some of those overwhelming days, I know how hard it is to see your child struggle. But this is why I’m so passionate about teaching children’s well-being and yoga. I’ve seen firsthand how something as simple as Savasana can change everything for a child. And I want that for every kid.

The Calm We Crave Starts with Stillness

So here’s my question: What if we gave our children more moments of stillness? What if we made time for them to rest, to breathe, to just be? What if we started practicing with them, even when they seem okay, so that when they’re not okay, they’ll have the tools they need?

That’s why I’m hosting my upcoming Savasana for Kids Masterclass—because I know how powerful this practice is for calming kids’ bodies and minds. And I want to share that with you.

If you’re ready to support your child’s mental health through yoga, especially through the power of Savasana, this masterclass is for you. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or caregiver, you’ll walk away with practical tools to help the kids in your life find calm and stillness.

I’ve found it hard to be still lately, too. But when we practice together—when we create space for stillness—we can help our kids thrive.

Are you ready to join me? Let’s advocate for our children’s mental health together.

Is it actually okay not be okay?

I’ve been sitting with something big the last few days and I realised a hidden belief I had for myself….. That it’s actually not okay to not be okay….. weird after sharing “It’s okay not to be okay.” for so long. But I realised that not being okay has usually equalled rejection and abonnement for…
