How to Use Savasana to Create Calm After a Busy or Stressful Day With Your Child

We’ve already talked about why Savasana is such an important tool for your child’s mental health, and we’ve shared how to get them excited about the practice through fun, engaging methods like spaghetti legs and cosy props. If you missed those posts, check them out here:

3 Creative Ways To Get Your Child Excited About Savasana (A.K.A Relaxation Time)

But there’s one big question that remains: When should we be practicing Savasana with our kids? And more importantly, how can we weave this practice into the busy lives we’re already living—especially when we struggle to slow down ourselves?

The truth is, with so much responsibilities and to do lists as a parent or caregiver, finding moments of stillness can feel nearly impossible. We’re often running on fumes, trying to get through the day, and the idea of adding one more thing to our routine can feel overwhelming. But that’s exactly why Savasana is so powerful—it doesn’t require a huge time commitment, and it can be that reset we all desperately need, especially after a chaotic day.

Here’s how to use Savasana to create a sense of calm after a busy or stressful day:

1. The Perfect Wind-Down Before Bed

One of the easiest ways to incorporate Savasana into your child’s daily routine is to practice it in the evening, before bedtime. After a day filled with school, activities, and a million emotions, this can be the moment where your child’s body and mind finally get to slow down.

  • Create a bedtime routine that includes Savasana: Once your child is in their PJs and ready for bed, guide them through a short Savasana. Use some of the playful techniques we talked about in the last post—spaghetti legs, cosy blankets, or a guided relaxation story. You only need a few minutes, but it can make a world of difference in helping them settle into sleep.

2. A Midday Reset for Overwhelm

If you notice your child becoming overwhelmed during the day—whether it’s after school or even after a busy playdate—Savasana can be a great tool to help them reset. Taking just five minutes to lie down, breathe, and relax can be the difference between an afternoon meltdown and a calm, peaceful child.

  • Find a quiet moment: Maybe it’s right after school or during a midday break. Use this time to guide your child into Savasana, allowing them to release the tension that builds up throughout the day.
  • If You are a Teacher, try adding time for this in your school day – It can make the world of difference to your students.

3. When You’re Feeling Overwhelmed Too

Let’s be real: we can’t talk about using Savasana for kids without admitting that we need it just as much. As parents and caregivers, we often struggle to find stillness ourselves. Our minds are constantly racing with to-do lists, worries, and endless responsibilities. But what if, instead of rushing through those stressful moments, we took a pause—with our kids?

  • Practice Savasana together: After a particularly challenging day, take a moment to lie down with your child and practice together. You’ll both benefit from the calm that follows, and it’s a beautiful way to model self-care and emotional regulation for your child.

Making Savasana a Regular Practice

The key to making Savasana a consistent part of your child’s day is to keep it simple, flexible, and fun. You don’t need a perfect setup or a specific time every day. The goal is to make it feel accessible, something you both look forward to.

In my upcoming masterclass, we’ll be diving deeper into the techniques we’ve talked about in these posts, and I’ll also be sharing a strategy for how to stay consistent with this practice—even when life gets busy and chaotic. Because as much as we want our kids to have this powerful tool for their mental health, we also know it can be hard to prioritize.

If you’re ready to create more calm in your child’s life (and yours), I’d love for you to join me. Together, we’ll explore practical, simple ways to incorporate Savasana into your routine, making stillness a regular and treasured part of your day.

By bringing these moments of stillness into your child’s day—whether it’s after school, before bed, or whenever they need it—you’re giving them a lifelong tool for managing stress, anxiety, and those big emotions that come with growing up. And the best part? You’re showing them that it’s okay to pause, breathe, and take a moment to simply be.
