“I don’t get a break at all over the summer! I can’t wait for the kid’s to go back to school!”
I hear this from so many parents who feel overwhelmed trying to balance fun activities for their kids while neglecting their own self-care. It isn’t that they don’t enjoy time with their children, it’s simply that routines have changed and suddenly it feels like there is an enormous pressure to do even more.
Whether you plan out the whole summer or take it day by day, it’s common to feel stretched thin.
Here’s what I would do if you came to me wanting a more peaceful and fulfilling summer, with time for fun and relaxation for your whole family.
1. I would encourage you to make time for self-care practices even if it meant doing them with the children close by or while they have their screen time.
You’ve heard it before, the cliché – can’t pour from and empty cup etc because it’s so true. Self-care is so important. And I’d actually give you the tools to make this possible and help you get back into balance. Your self-care matters. It’s what allows you to show up as the parent you want to be. To be more responsive and less reactive. I know on the days I’ve been more snappy and less patient, it was because I wasn’t feeling calm within myself – I felt overwhelmed, tired, in pain /not well. Taking time to create calm within yourself first really sets you up to be able to handle challenges with much more ease, this doesn’t mean perfectly, but it does make a huge difference.
2. I’d teach you the importance of checking in for both you and your child.
Self-awareness and learning to check in energetically and emotionally with your body is crucial for both parents and children because it helps you to manage emotions and leads to better stress management and emotional regulation. For parents this helps them be more calm and patient and for children it helps to build emotional intelligence and resilience.
3. I’d show you how practicing yoga both for yourself and with your kids can help you to create more calm at home and offer a really nice way to spend quality time together.
There are so many beautiful ways to practice yoga together. It can be fun, calming or a mix of both. To work with your goal of more fun and relaxation this summer, I’d show you calming poses and playful ways to help your child relax.
4. I’d introduce you breathwork practices that could literally change your life and share ways to practice with your child to help support their wellbeing too.
The wonderful thing about breathwork is that it can be practiced just about anytime and anywhere. It is one of the quickest and most effective ways to help bring some balance back and help the body and mind to calm down – no matter what age.
5. I’d show you how simple it can be to add mindfulness and meditation into your day.
It’s easier than you think! It doesn’t require alot of time and doesn’t need any special equipment. It’s as simple as bringing an awareness to your surroundings, an object or even your breath. Just a few minutes can make a big difference! There are so many ways to practice and it can be as simple as taking time to mindfully enjoy your coffee in the morning!
Having a more calm and enjoyable summer doesn’t need to be hard! You just need the right tools in your self-care toolbox for both you and your child.
And I’m here to support you!
Inside The Calm Method, you’ll learn how to go from overwhelmed with trying to find any kind of balance this summer to feeling like a self-care pro 😎

I don’t always want to practice Yoga with my Children
This might surprise you, especially coming from someone who talks about yoga together sooo much, but I don’t always want to practice yoga with my children. And sometimes… they don’t want to practice with me either. The other day, I rolled out my mat ready for my own practice. And like a moth to a…
